Service Area Business on Google: Setup, Verification, and Ranking Mistakes

Updated October 2026 • 7 min read

The short answer: A service area business (SAB) serves customers at their location instead of a storefront. On Google, you hide your address, list up to 20 service areas, and verify the profile by whatever method Google requests, often a short video. Rankings depend heavily on proximity, reviews, and relevance.

Are you a service area business?

You are one if you travel to customers and do not serve them at your address. Think plumbers, HVAC, cleaners, landscapers, pest control, mobile detailers, and electricians.

You are not an SAB if customers regularly come to your location. A shop with a counter is a storefront. Some businesses are hybrids, with a storefront and a service area. Those can show their address and list service areas.

This matters because getting it wrong can lead to suspensions.

How to set up a service area business on Google

Here is the process in plain steps.

  1. Go to your Google Business Profile and search for your business, or add it.
  2. Enter your business name. Use your real, public name. No keyword stuffing.
  3. Choose your category. Pick the one that describes your main service.
  4. Answer the location question. If you do not serve customers at your address, choose to serve customers at their location and hide your address.
  5. Add service areas. List the cities or ZIP codes you actually cover.
  6. Add your phone number and website.
  7. Complete your services, hours, description, and photos.
  8. Verify.

How to choose your service areas

Google lets you list up to 20 service areas. More is not better.

  • List places you truly serve and can reach reasonably quickly.
  • Start with your home city and nearby towns.
  • Do not list a city 90 minutes away to "rank there." It rarely works and can look spammy.
  • Match your list to the service area pages on your website.

A tighter list is easier to defend, and easier to support with content.

How to verify a service area business on Google

Verification proves you are a real business at the location you gave. Google decides which method you get. Common options include:

  • Video verification. Very common for SABs.
  • Phone call or text.
  • Email.
  • Postcard with a code.

If you get video verification, prepare ahead. Google typically wants to see things like:

  • A continuous recording, not edited clips.
  • Your location, with signs or street view of where you are based.
  • Your tools, equipment, or branded vehicle.
  • Proof you operate the business, such as licenses, invoices, or business documents.

Requirements can change, so follow the exact instructions Google shows in your profile.

Tips to avoid a failed attempt:

  • Use the same business name, address, and phone number that appear on your website.
  • Do it in daylight with good audio.
  • Keep the recording in one take.
  • Do not rush. Failed attempts can slow the process down.

If you get stuck, contact Google Business Profile support through the help center rather than creating a duplicate listing.

Ranking mistakes service area businesses make

Mistake 1: Using a fake address

Virtual offices, PO boxes, and made-up addresses violate Google's rules and can get you suspended. If you work from home, hide the address. That is what the setting is for.

Mistake 2: Keyword stuffing the business name

"Joe's Plumbing - Best Plumber Greenville Emergency" is a name violation. Use the name on your sign and invoices.

Mistake 3: Listing too many service areas

Twenty is the limit, not the target. Stay realistic.

Mistake 4: Creating multiple listings for different cities

Setting up a separate profile for every town without a real location there is a fast path to suspension.

Mistake 5: Expecting to rank everywhere you serve

Proximity matters a lot. You will usually rank best near your base. To grow beyond it, you need reviews from customers in those areas, local pages, and consistent content.

Mistake 6: Inconsistent NAP

Different phone numbers or names across directories confuse Google. See What Is NAP Consistency?

Mistake 7: Ignoring reviews

Reviews are a major trust and ranking signal. Here is how to get them without being pushy: How to Get More Google Reviews.

Mistake 8: No supporting website content

Your profile is only half the story. Build one page per core service and one for each key area you serve. See our Local SEO for Service Businesses page for how it all connects.
